I am enjoying Walks in Rome fairly well because I knew what to expect. I have an old, old copy of the book and wanted one I could mark up. If a person did not realize how long ago this was written, they would probably be shocked when they opened it.I don't believe they would be expecting all the quotations in French and Latin, let alone in English. There are many, many, many! Some of the English ones are interesting, some not. And since I only had one year of French and four years of Latin, both over 50 years ago, those quotations are hopeless.
My major disappointment is that the type of the quotations is so small. I realize that the pages are copies of an original book and this is why. But that doesn't make it any easier to read. Of course, his room-by-room long lists of art works such as those in the Capitoline museums and the Gallery Doria Pamphili (which are even smaller) are very possibly not accurate any more so those are skipable and don't bother me.
I guess I would say I'm reading this for fun and not any additional knowledge about my favorite city before I go back again in fall 2012.
